Roots of Hope
Roots of Hope
Roots of Hope is the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s Community Suicide Prevention Project.
This project builds upon community expertise, as well as national and international best practices, to implement and test proven suicide prevention interventions in 8 communities across Canada. In partnership with the Waterloo Region Suicide Prevention Council, Here4Hope represents Ontario.
The goal of the project is to develop an evidence base, including best practices and suicide prevention guidelines and tools to support implementing suicide prevention activities across Canada.
The components of the Roots of Hope Project include:
- Specialized supports: a range of possible prevention, intervention and postvention services such as support groups and coordinated planning and access.
- Training and Networks: training and learning opportunities for community gatekeepers (physicians, first responders, nurses, HR staff and managers, teachers, etc.).
- Public awareness campaigns: locally driven campaigns (posters, brochures, social media, etc.).
- Means safety: identify “hot spots” and implement measures to restrict access to these methods.
- Research: to increase the suicide prevention evidence base.
